Chicago Botanic Garden will be hosting a Railroading Merit Badge Workshop. This is a great opportunity to meet professionals in the railroad industry and learn from their experience. We will be working with model railroads as well as model railroad engineers who run the train garden here at CBG, visited by 70,000 visitors per year. Scouts must complete the Railroading Merit Badge Worksheet AND bring a signed Blue Card from their Scoutmaster. Scouts who have not completed the worksheet will not be allowed to attend the workshop.

During the workshop, the speakers and merit badge counselor will review the worksheet as well as provide train demonstrations. We will not break for a formal lunch period, but please feel free to bring a snack that can be eaten between stations. Parking is included for every registered Boy Scout. This program will take place on the Regenstein Learning Campus. Park in parking lot 5 or 6 and plan for a five-minute walk to the program space. Preregistration is required. For registration or for more information, call (847) 835-8239. No refunds will be available for cancellations or no-shows.

Radio Merit Badge (Jamboree on the Air)

http://www.scouting.org/jota.aspx

WA9BSA Jamboree On The Air

OCT 19-21, 2018

Camp Kishwakee, Millhurst Rd., just south of Plano, IL

Pre-Registration and details: https://scoutingevent.com/?OrgKey=BSA127&calendarID=112120

Scouts of any age can participate, from Cub Scouts to Boy Scouts and Venturers, including girls. Once at the ham radio station, the communication typically involves talking on a microphone and listening on the station speakers. However, many forms of specialized communication may also be taking place, such as video communication, digital communication (much like sending a message on your smartphone but transmitted by radio), or communication through a satellite relay or an earth-based relay (called a repeater). The exchanges include such information as name, location (called QTH in ham speak), Scout rank, age, and hobbies. The stations you’ll be communicating with can be across town, across the country, or even around the world! The World Scout Bureau reported that nearly 1 million Scouts and almost 20,000 amateur radio operators participated in the 2015 JOTA, from more than 17,776 stations in 151 countries.

Radio Merit Badge will class will be Friday night starting about 6pm. All Scouts are welcome to attend. Please have adult leadership appropriate for your level of Scouting. All are encouraged to camp out if they wish. This event is free to all. Units are responsible for their own food and camping supplies. Bring your own water. The water at the camp is not safe to drink. There is a kybo available.

This is a very laid back event. There is no lights-out time. Being J.O.T.A. is a global event, time is relative to location. We may be up at 3am, but the World Scout Office is just going to lunch! Outside of the Amateur Radio program this is a pure camping event. You may come for the Radio Merit Badge class and come back the next day for the rest of the requirements if you wish. All Scouts remember to see your Scoutmaster for your Blue Card. It may be laid back, but you still need forms A and B of your Scout Physical! Registration opens at 5pm on Friday night. Please do not arrive really early. Setting up takes some time.

Anyone wishing to attend please contact Jason Peeler.

https://scoutingevent.com/attachment/BSA127/document_15043000310_1953.pdf

What is Ham Radio?

For more than a century, experimenters have developed the technology we use to keep in touch with one another. With an amateur radio license, you can use a radio to communicate with people all over the world using computers, satellites, and even equipment you build yourself.

Come learn how youth and adult members alike can serve on exciting volunteer missions for America. Aircraft displays, flight simulators, information booths, and live demonstrations are just a few of the attractions open to everyone.

LUNCH (12-3 PM): Join us for a freshly cooked hotdog lunch, along with snacks and cold refreshments (for a small donation only), and then enjoy our Civil Air Patrol open house, FAA aviation safety seminar and Boy Scout Aviation Merit Badge Class & Flights.

BOY SCOUT AVIATION MERIT BADGE CLASS & FLIGHTS (11-5 PM): We’ve partnered with the Boy Scouts of America, Three Fires Council, to host an Aviation Merit Badge Class and Demonstration Flights. Everyone, especially children interested in aerospace, are invited to attend the class and learn about aviation. Boy Scouts registered with the council will enjoy actual flights in various aircraft after the class (see registration form below). Please note that the flights are not hosted by Civil Air Patrol; These are performed by volunteer private pilots unrelated to Civil Air Patrol. Participation on a flight is optional for Scouts and have a small donation to help offset cost of fuel. Schedule for Scouts:

11AM – 1PM: Aviation Class

1PM – 2PM: Lunch (bring a lunch or we have hotdog lunch for small donation)

2PM – 5PM: Choice of Flight (for $25 donation), Tower Tour (free) or Paper Airplane Project (free)

Be sure to register for the Aviation Class and Flights using the form below.

FAA SAFETY SEMINAR (2-4 PM): Join the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) for a 2-hour seminar covering everything you need to know about small unmanned aerial systems (sUAS), UAVs, RPVs, drones — whatever you want to call them — for recreational, photography\videography, commercial operations, search and rescue, law enforcement and more. This session will brief you on applications\usage, safety issues, best practices, Federal Aviation Regulations (FARS), and especially the new FAA FAR Part 107 for Commercial sUAS Operations. Learn how CAP is now augmenting their flight operations with drones for their Disaster Recover and Search & Rescue operations. Static displays, demonstrations and lunch will also be available as part of this CAP Open House seminar.
